Antony Knight, born in 1997, is a Canadian composer, lyricist, music director, director and performer. While his work spans a wide range of genres, he specializes in storytelling through music— particularly opera, musical theatre and film. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition and Opera Performance from the University of British Columbia. He was commissioned to compose Oh Alfred!, a full-length opera premiered by the Vernon Proms Classical Music Festival, which he also directed. He took part in Vancouver Opera’s New Works Program, developing two original opera scenes. His concert works have been performed by the Vancouver, Victoria, and UBC Symphony Orchestras. He’s had pieces commissioned by The UBC Contemporary Players Ensemble, The Belkin Art Gallery, and had a piece premiered at Vancouver Pro Musica’s Sonic Boom Festival. In musical theatre, he has written music and lyrics for The Magician’s Nephew (Royal Bay Secondary School), The Musical Origins of Spider-Man (Tyler Drewe Productions), and is developing Sugar Island, a new musical supported by Sunset Theatre’s Exploration Series. He also directed and choreographed Absence; Creation, a contemporary ballet co-created with composer Jack Campbell and premiered with the Emerging Artists of Ballet BC. He has scored theatrical productions including PSSST… ! (UBCO Theatre) and The Triumph of Love (Western Gold Theatre), and arranged Frog Belly Rat Bone for Axis Theatre. In film, Antony has scored various short films and documentaries, winning Best Score at UBC’s POV Film Festival for The Knockers. As a performer and music director, Antony has worked with companies such as Arts Club, Chemainus, Kaleidoscope, Urban Ink, Metro Theatre, Theatre Under the Stars, UBC Opera, and Opera Kelowna.
